Club Donic Player Crowned National Champion

For the first time since the club owned six years ago, Club Donic has a National Champion.  Evin McGovern took the title of National Champion in Under 12 boys after a hard fought battle against Brian Dunleavy in the final.  This was a tremendous win for Evin who finishes in the Under 12 boys as the Irish number 1 and Under 12 National Champion.  On Sunday Evin had another fantastic tournament, finishing in the top 8 in the Under 14 boys, while Tom Davis battled his way to finish in 3rd place, having just lost one match against Johnny Porter all day.  A fantastic tournament for the boys this weekend.  In the mean time, our Under 10s were out in force with Mia Egan winning many matches in her first tournament and Jackie Xue also had a great Under 10 tournament.  These are ones to watch next year as they are both Under 10 again next year. Stephen Briggs and William Hou also competed in the Boys Under 10 tournament, where the competition was fierce this year.  Next week, we have the Inter-provincial tournament, with 4 players from Club Donic selected to play for Leinster.  Best of luck to all next week!

2011-12 – A Great Season for Club Donic Players

2011-12 has been a great season for Club Donic.  One of the first tournaments of the season was the Ulster Open, where Evin McGovern took the title of Under 12 boys.  This was a tremendous achievement for Evin and Club Donic.  The next Irish tournament was an even better achievement for the club, with Tom Davis, who battled very hard to take the title of the Under 14 boys, while Evin took second place in the Under 12 boys and Alex McGovern taking first place in the Under 10 boys, making this one of Club Donic’s best every tournaments on record.  The most recent Irish tournament took place in Mayo, the Connacht Open.  Tom Davis was knocked out in the quarter finals by Zak Wilson, who went on to win the Cadet boys.  In the Under 12 boys, Donie Mullally met Evin McGovern in the quarters, with Evin battling it out to defeat Donie in the quarters.  Evin, unfortunately, was beaten in the semis by Martin Williams, who went on to take the Under 12 boys title.  Tom finished in 4th place, while Donie finished in 6th place.  Tom Davis had a great Under 17 boys tournament, beating Zak Wilson in one of his early rounds and finishing up in a very respectable 7th place in the Under 17 boys.  Conor Mullally had his best tournament of the season, beating Kevin Hutchinson in the quarters and finishing up in 4th place.  Grainne O’Rourke also had her best tournament of the season, finishing up in a very respectable 6th place in the Under 12 girls.  Well done to all our players this season and we are now looking forward to the National Championships, which will take place on 21st April, where we have 21 players from Club Donic, competing in this tournament.

Boys in Germany 2011

August 2011 On 31st August 2011, 11 players, two coaches and some parents travelled to Grenzau in Germany for a training camp.  This was Club Donic’s second time to travel to Grenzau so we knew to expect great training and superb food.  While we were there, we linked up with an excellent club from Berlin, who had travelled with 16 players from their club.  Half of our players trained with the Berlin boys while the other half trained with players from Frankfurt, Munich and various other German clubs.  The highlight of the week was our challenge match against the Berlin crowd, which we lost only narrowly this year by 11 games to 8, proving that Club Donic has grown in strength from the last challenge match that we played against them in 2010.  Hope all the boys had a great time and our ready for the new season, which will commence with the Irish Junior Classification on 10-11 September in DCU, Glasnevin.  Best of luck to all our players this season!!
